Firstly, apologies for the late post, but that’s what a long weekend will do..
Last night, we were reminded why the Idol finalists are finalists as we had probably the best lot of performances to date. It’s a real pity that they left it until this late to do the acoustic night.. our opinion is start off with acoustic night & then originals night so the public see the talent, then maybe go into the other genres, or better yet kills the genres altogether.. but you’ve heard us go on about this before so lets launch into the reviews instead..
Mark Da Costa — Ok, so we were proved wrong and Mark showed there’s more to him than just hard rock. His performance was still a little on the “rocky” side but it sure was a side to him we haven’t as yet seen. We thought his rendition of “Yellow” was really unique & he showed us that he truly can sing. We saw quite a bit of substance to him which we liked. Even his mullet-ish wierd looking hairstyle is starting to grow on us, or maybe we are just getting used to it! Mark’s a talent and as we’ve said before, his experience and maturity are helping him along in the songs he chooses, the way he delivers them and his performances. He’s a contender for at least the Top 4 wethinks. We are pretty sure Mark is safe for tonight’s vote.
Natalie Gauci — Wow! Last night’s performance from Nat confirmed to us why we think she is so good. She absolutely nailed her performance and we’re so glad she chose to play the piano, albeit a last minute decision. At first we thought, now that’s an unusual song to pick especially for acoustic night and yes, because it really is a song sung by a man (if you can call MJ that!), but she was awesome. Now we’re pretty annoyed that Mark didn’t see fit to award her a TD & it further goes to show that Mark has his favourites & he was against Nat at the beginning. He gave her good comments but she, if anyone, deserved a touchdown for sure. Even on their radio show today on Nova, Dicko and Christie & the radio audience thought that Mark was “stingy” in not awarding Nat a TD - at least she got a “Totally sicko from Dicko”! She looked great last night, and really sang well and the fact that she played the piano so well just showed that Nat is a contender for the top spots in this year’s series. We have no doubt Nat will be safe tonight.
Carl Riseley — Another WOW! Carl has really grown on us such that he is now one of our favourites. We know there are a lot of people that don’t like Carl but they just don’t get that he is really very talented. They just don’t like him because they don’t like his style.. its obviously not mainstream pop, but for what he does, he does it really well and there are more people in the world that like swing/jazz than most people think. It was an unusual song and even though there are a few Harry Connick Jr fans amongst our team, even they hadn’t heard that song too many times. Carl did give the usual guitar-players a run for their money with his trumpeting. We weren’t sure how you would blend trumpet playing in to an Idol performance, but there you go.. Carl showed us how, and he was brilliant in his performance. Isn’t Marcia happy that she fought for him. She must be thinking “see? now do you believe me?!” We think Carl should be safe tonight as well and we think Carl’s fan base is growing strong.
Jacob Butler — To be honest, we thought Jacob should’ve been the one voted out last week for his pretty lame attempt at JK. But he didn’t even get bottom 3 which proves his fan base is stronger than we think. As for his performance last night.. much better than last week but we kind of agree with Kyle. Most of the team like Keane and especially that song, but we don’t think Jake did it justice last night. We thought, maybe its the way he looks as we’re getting to the stage where we think Jake is a little try-hardish, but we even tried listening to his performance with the video off, and still, we don’t see what Dicko saw in it. It was good, but we don’t think it was anywhere near the same standard as a lot of the other contestants. Our thinking is that Jake will be Bottom 3 this week.
Daniel Mifsud — If you hadn’t seen last night’s performance, what would you think if someone told you “Daniel Mifsud is singing KISS”. Our first thought was, “what the..?!” & “what a bad song choice”, but we guess we were proved wrong. It was sure a unique arrangement and we guess Mark really liked it. Not sure if we thought it was great or not. We did like it but not sure if it really deserved a TD. We guess Mark just saw the potential in it & may want to get the rights to release it albeit performed by someone else. We like Daniel, don’t get us wrong, but we’re just not sure if he absolutely nailed the performance. Other bloggers are saying that he got the TD for the arrangement & not actually for the performance which makes more sense but also doesn’t make sense if you know what we mean! He started off really well but we guess we just can’t shake the fact he’s singing a KISS classic. We think its because we don’t really like that song. In any case, we think Misfud is safe for tonight. One finaly note, we’re so glad it looks like he’s dropped the scarf look on performance nights though, we hate the scarves!
Matt Corby – We are astonished that Matt is only 17. His performances sure seem so much mature than that. We really liked his performance last night.. it had a Bobby Flynn feel to it although not so out of this world-ish. We thought Matt nailed this song - it was entrancing and his vocals were really spot on. We’re a bit sick of the screaming girls but we guess that comes with the territory because apparently “he’s so cute”! We wonder how popular he would be if he didn’t look like he did.. just one of those hypothetical questions that really shouldn’t be asked because they can never be answered! A style note - we hate those picnic rugs he keeps wearing around his neck.. what is that all about?! Glad that he didn’t choose to wear it on stage this week. We have no doubt Matt is safe for tonight.
More reviews soon…
